Bus Technician Career Opportunity Overview

NYC Water Cruises is seeking an experienced Bus Technician II or III to maintain and repair our fleet of double-decker sightseeing buses operating throughout New York City.

Candidates with experience in motorcoaches, transit buses, Class 8 trucks, RVs, commercial fleet maintenance, shuttle buses, or heavy-duty diesel equipment are highly encouraged to apply.

About Our Sightseeing Fleet & Systems Serviced

Fleet Platforms

Double-decker sightseeing buses built on industry-leading chassis which may include Alexander Dennis (Enviro500), Van Hool, Prevost, MCI, New Flyer, and Gillig.

Heavy Diesel Power & Drivetrain

Diesel powerplants (ISB, ISC, L9 series etc.) paired with automatic transmissions and air suspension systems.

Commercial Transit Systems

Air brake systems, multiplex electrical wiring, DEF/emissions controls, hydraulic steering, passenger HVAC, wheelchair accessibility lifts, and commercial destination lighting.

Bus Technician Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and perform routine PM services on diesel engines and commercial systems
  • Troubleshoot electrical issues, multiplex wiring, and electronic destination displays
  • Service automatic transmissions, cooling systems, and hydraulic steering controls
  • Diagnose and repair DEF, DPF, and SCR emissions aftertreatment systems
  • Perform complete air brake system overhauls, valve servicing, and lining replacements
  • Repair air suspension components, steering systems, passenger HVAC, and wheelchair lifts
  • Perform complete DOT inspections, road tests, and breakdown field responses as needed
  • Maintain detailed digital work orders, safety logs, and fleet maintenance records

Technician II & III Qualifications

Technician II Requirements:

  • 3+ years heavy-duty diesel or commercial vehicle repair experience
  • Solid diesel diagnostic skills, air brake repair, and electrical troubleshooting
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to perform field breakdown service when needed

Technician III Requirements (In Addition to Level II):

  • 7+ years commercial fleet maintenance experience
  • Advanced electrical, diesel engine, and automatic transmission diagnostics
  • Advanced emissions system troubleshooting and fleet preventive maintenance planning
  • Ability to mentor junior technicians and optimize shop workflow

Equivalent Experience & Preferred Certifications

  • Class 8 Trucks, Motorcoaches, Transit Buses, School Buses, Fire/Emergency Vehicles
  • RVs, Shuttle Buses, Refuse/Utility Trucks, Airport Ground Support Equipment, Heavy Equipment, or Military Wheeled Vehicles

Preferred Certifications:

  • ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Certifications, Cummins Training, Allison Transmission Training
  • Air Brake Certification, OEM Transit Training, Commercial Driver's License (CDL preferred, not required)
