Marine Diesel Technician Career Opportunity Overview

Join NYC Water Cruises, one of New York City's premier passenger vessel operations. We are seeking an experienced Marine Diesel Technician II or III to maintain and repair a fleet of luxury charter vessels operating throughout New York Harbor.

This is an excellent opportunity for technicians with strong marine diesel experience. Candidates with heavy-duty diesel, power generation, locomotive, or industrial equipment backgrounds looking to transition into the marine industry are highly encouraged to apply.

About Our Fleet & Systems Serviced

M/V Grande Mariner

183-foot shallow-water passenger vessel powered by Twin Caterpillar 3412D V-12 diesel engines (1,500 Total HP).

Eternity Yacht

135-foot luxury charter yacht with Twin Caterpillar 3406 turbocharged marine diesels, ZF325-1A marine transmissions, commercial HVAC/galley, and high-load diesel generators.

Louisa of the Seas

110-foot luxury event yacht with Twin ~1,200 HP diesel propulsion engines, dual marine generator sets, marine HVAC, electrical, and hydraulic support systems.

Marine Diesel Technician Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and service marine diesel engines and electronic engine controls
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, valve adjustments, and turbocharger care
  • Troubleshoot and repair marine fuel, cooling, raw water, and exhaust systems
  • Service and overhaul ZF marine transmissions, steering, and hydraulic systems
  • Maintain marine electrical systems, onboard diesel generators, and charging circuits
  • Perform vibration analysis and specialized mechanical diagnostics when necessary
  • Maintain complete digital work orders, parts tracking, and maintenance documentation
  • Ensure strict compliance with USCG regulations and company safety procedures
  • Participate in emergency vessel repairs alongside captains and chief engineers
  • Weekend and Holiday availability required during peak season
  • On-Call availability for emergency repairs may be required

Technician II & III Qualifications

Technician II Requirements:

  • 3+ years diesel repair experience (Caterpillar, MTU, DDE or Cummins etc. engine background preferred)
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, diesel diagnostics, and ability to interpret service manuals
  • Familiarity with hydraulic systems, electrical troubleshooting, and working onboard vessels
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to work safely in marine environments

Technician III Requirements (In Addition to Level II):

  • 7+ years heavy diesel or marine technician experience
  • Extensive Caterpillar, Cummins, MTU or Detroit Diesel ETC. engine diagnostics and major engine overhaul capability
  • Advanced marine transmission, generator, and complex electrical diagnostic expertise
  • Experience managing marine preventive maintenance programs and mentoring junior technicians

Preferred Experience & Certifications

Welcomed Industry Backgrounds:

  • Marine Diesel Techs, Caterpillar, Cummins, DDE, MTU, etc. Marine / Industrial Dealers, Commercial Fishing, Tug & Barge, Ferry Operations
  • Power Generation, Heavy Equipment, Class 8 Truck Techs, and Diesel Rebuild Specialists

Preferred Certifications:

  • Caterpillar, Cummins, MTU or DDE etc. Certifications, ABYC Certifications, USCG Engineering Experience, OEM Diesel / ASE Training

Compensation, Benefits & Perks

$40.00 - $50.00/hour starting wage based on level & experience
